11/18/02 puget18 newsTacoma's Commencement Bay was listed as a Federal Superfund site in 1981 and it remains one of the most polluted parts of Puget Sound. Less than 5% of the original estarine habitat remains, and that has been severely impacted by urban and industrial pollution. Cleanup of contaminated sediments in the Hylebos Waterway is underway.
